Hola!
We wanted you to know we will be going to Guatemala again in March 2012!
The what. As you might already know, this is an intensive 9-day workshop where you are fully immersed in a foreign culture and work shoulder to shoulder with the Gods Child Project - a top non-governmental aid organization deeply involved with social and human rights issues. Additional to the work we do with the Gods Child Project, we also have a great working relationship with the Bomberos of Guatemala City - these are the ambulance drivers who are called for any and all occasion they are needed. This is usually an overnight (of no sleep) and its an amazing opportunity for image-making.
There are many more details to give you but the important thing to know is once in Antigua on Saturday your basic needs - breakfast, dinners, and a clean and secure place to sleep - are handled. All you need to concern yourself with is the day-to-day immersion in all the amazing photography opportunities available here. Each evening you will return to your host family for dinner, back up your files and do a soft edit. After dinner we will be meeting together as a group to run a crit on the day's work.
The when. The dates for the workshop begin Thursday evening March 8 and run thru Friday night March 16. Beginning on Thursday night March 8 all of your accommodations are taken care of through Friday night March 16. You will arrive in Guatemala City where we will host your stay at the Hotel Colonial for Thursday and Friday nights - your meals are on your own but we will probably be dining together. On Saturday morning the aid organization will pick us up and take us to La Antigua where we will be staying with host families who provide your housing, breakfast and dinners on all days (except Sunday).
What you get. You get is two nights at the Hotel Colonial in Guatemala City (March 8 and 9 - meals on these days are not provided), transportation to Antigua on Saturday, once in Antigua your housing from Saturday, March 10 through Friday night March 16 with breakfasts and dinners for these days (except Sunday) are covered, transportation from Antigua to the Guatemala City airport for your return flight. Each day you will be transported to any one of the God's Child Project worksites or facilities and brought back in the evening. Most days you will be meeting after dinner for a review of the day's work and critique - this is an important part of the whole experience.
The cost. The cost is $2,495. As in the past this trip will fill quickly, a $500. deposit will hold your spot, don't delay if you want to be on this trip. This rate does not include airfare, but the good news is airfares to Guatemala City are very reasonable if bought in advance.

Reportage: Las Vegas 2011
Reportage: Las Vegas 2011
WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION:
This five-day workshop is for photographers looking to hone their skills in one of the iconic destinations in American culture. Las Vegas offers a wide variety of opportunities for the documentarian, visual journalist, or street photographer. For over 60 years the glitz, glamour, and glare of the neon of the Las Vegas Strip held the fascination of those who came by the thousands…and still do. The over-the-top scale of what happens in Vegas is also matched by its problems including the decay of the “former” Las Vegas and where one in every 25 homes has fallen into foreclosure. This is truly a destination with something for everyone in the desert sun.
BASE OF OPERATION: Though most projects will not involve daily travel of more than a few miles our base will be at the center of it all on the Las Vegas Strip – we will be staying at one of the upscale casino hotels in the middle of the action, within walking distance to most of the attractions, great restaurants, and any and all convenience imaginable.
COURSE DATES: February 16 thru 20, 2011

Our trips to Guatemala these past 3 years have been wonderful social explorations. Many of our students from our first ever trip to Guatemala have returned on their own and with us as teaching assistants to hone their photography skills in a country that has grown to be part of their lives.
This is the kind of once-in-a-lifetime kind of trip that fosters not only great photography but incredible self-exploration and bonds that last a lifetime. Be part of a trip that we can NEVER offer twice. There will be other destinations but only one first time as we travel to India.
Many details are being worked out every day but we wanted to offer this trip at a special discounted "expeditionary" rate. While we always consider the portfolios photographers submit important, prior foreign travel experience and a willingness to be ready for unforeseen challenges are additional key criteria for this journey.

VRWorkshops Guate 2009 in the books!
© Tayler Aubin/VRWorkshops '09
We just completed one of our best workshops to date and the work is really strong. We had a great bunch of participants all of whom we now consider good friends. There is something about these workshops that create such a sense of brotherhood not to mention great photography.
Some of what is being said:
© Michaela O'Brien/VRWorkshops '09
"I had a great experience on the trip [Guatemala 2009]. More importantly, I wanted to express the gratitude I feel for your realization and perseverance to compose this trip. The philosophy behind the trip is just as important as any memory we might have. As a whole, it was great to know that others share this passion for a combination of creative independence along with a collective organization to enhance through support and criticism. I learned a lot from myself and others and have great courage to pursue my passions. This [trip] took me that much closer to my Truth."
-Michaela O'Brien/VRWorkshops '09
© Eve Lyman/VRWorkshops '09
"I am leaving Guatemala this morning. I have had the incredible opportunity to decompress in the tranquility and beauty of my friends house in Ciudad Vieja. But I just want to take this moment, before being swept off in the hustle and bustle of life in the US to thank each and every one of you for the priviledge of getting to know you and being a part of this phenomenal experience we shared."
-Eve Lyman/VRWorkshops '09
© Allycia Kimball/VRWorkshops '09
"America no longer feels like home. I almost stayed for another week...I want to thank you for your unconditional guidance and understanding on this trip. I woke up. In a way I was not expecting."
-Allycia Kimball/VRWorkshops '09
We want to personally thank the terrific NGOs we work with, The God's Child Project and SEVA for allowing us the access into these stories. For all those wishing to donate money or your precious time to some worthy cause being involved with either of these two organizations will change your life.
We are posting many of the stories from our students on our main web site: www.visualreportage.com so be sure to check out all the great work these amazing people accomplished in just 8 days.
So what is next: VRWorkshops Reportage: INDIA 2009 (~November 20 - November 30). We are busily working out all the details but since this is our expeditionary trip to this unbelievable place we will be offering an equally "unbelievable" price for this first workshop. With only 12 spots maximum it is best to start thinking about this now. Please contact us at visualreportage@gmail.com with any questions or to get on a mailing list.
We look forward to seeing you on our next trip.

***************************************************************************************
Final Installment (balance due = $1,795):
***************************************************************************************
REQUIREMENTS: To support nightly critiques this is a digital only workshop. Photographers are expected to bring the following:
* Laptop computer.
* Editing software – A working and installed version of any of the following: Aperture, Lightroom, Photoshop, or PhotoMechanic.
* An external hard drive is strongly recommended for daily image backup.
* See the packing section for recommended camera/lens information.
ASSIGNMENT: Reportage: Guatemala is a 10-day intensive workshop for emerging photographers who want to create a visual media project much like a foreign assignment they would receive from an agency or editor. This workshop is designed to allow the student to experience a documentary assignment in the field with expert instruction from working photojournalists.
For this trip we will be working with God's Child Project, an NGO with an important presence in Guatemala. Photographers will work alongside aid workers as they work with Guatemalan children. The opportunity for the photographer is to make an in-depth reportage of the problems and issues they face as well as the solution they try to apply.
We will review each photographer's work every evening with an eye toward supporting the building of the story. The value of these critiques is applied in the next day's shooting.
Part of the emphasis of the workshop is to find the social relevance and pertinent issues associated with each choice of story. The use of photography and in some cases audio also will support the effective and powerful storytelling of these very human situations.
PRIOR TO DEPARTURE VIDEO CONFERENCE: Two or three weeks before leaving we will meet by internet video conference (Skype or AIM) to discuss pre-trip details. This will be an opportunity to fine tune your preparations and to ask questions that may involve your story ideas or other concerns.
